From January to August 2023, the utility model patents granted in China decreased by 26.98% by year,

Recently, the State Intellectual Property Office released the main statistical data of intellectual property from January to August 2023. Compared with January to August 2022, the number of invention patents granted increased by 11.78% year-on-year, utility models decreased by 26.98% year-on-year, and designs decreased by 9.22% year-on-year.

1. Patents From January to August 2023, the number of invention patents granted in China was 609,000, the number of utility model patents granted was 1.429 million, and the number of design patents granted was 435,000. As of the end of August 2023, the effective number of invention patents in China was 4.724 million. Among them, the effective number of domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan District) invention patents is 3.757 million. The effective number of utility model patents was 11.674 million. The number of design patents in force is 3.075 million. From January to August 2023, our Office received 46,400 PCT international patent applications. Among them, 43,100 were submitted by domestic applicants. From January to August 2023, Chinese applicants filed a total of 1,226 international design applications[1]. From January to August 2023, a total of 973[2] international design applications were published designated as China. 

2. Trademarks From January to August 2023, the number of trademark applications in China was 4.755 million, and the number of trademark registrations was 2.718 million. As of August 2023, there are 44.781 million valid registered trademarks. From January to August 2023, our Office received 4,071 applications for the international registration of Madrid trademarks from Chinese applicants. 

3. Layout Design of Geographical Indications and Integrated Circuits From January to August 2023, China approved the protection of 6 geographical indication products, approved the registration of geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and approved the use of 4,980 market entities with special geographical indications. As of August 2023, a total of 2,501 GI products have been approved, 7,213 GIs have been approved for registration as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and 26,228 market entities have been approved to use GIs. From January to August 2023, there were 7,830 applications for registration of integrated circuit layout designs in China; 6,938 certificates were issued.
